AI in AV – transforming experiences with digital displays

Artificial intelligence. AI. Call it what you will, it is becoming increasingly prevalent. In the AV industry we are talking about it a lot. A hot topic at conferences, trade shows, and in general conversation. And whether consciously or not, most of us are integrating AI into our work in some way.

AI’s capabilities are developing at a remarkable pace. Even to the extent that AI is gradually merging with digital intelligence – those skills we use to make the technology work for us – automating even more of our tasks and enhancing our efficiency.

So, how does that translate into the world of display manufacturing. How are we incorporating AI, and how does it support our customers?

AI in display manufacturing

The production of professional displays, including LCD, ePaper, and LED, is highly complex. AI plays a significant role at multiple stages of the process. Improving efficiency, quality, and productivity, and reducing waste.

The influence of AI can already be seen in research and development, where AI can be used to hone the process, to speed up simulation and modelling. AI allows teams to test new ideas and theories before moving to physical production, ultimately streamlining innovation.

During production itself, AI can assist in monitoring and optimising factory conditions. It analyses, adapts, and fine tunes manufacturing processes, and can even take on intricate tasks, such as laser cutting, encapsulation, or the precise placement of mini LEDs. This reduces the risk of defects and ensures higher quality outputs.

Quality control also benefits from AI, with advanced cameras trained to detect microscopic scratches, misalignments, pixel failures, and other issues that might escape the notice of human inspectors or traditional sensors.

And AI supports demand forecasting, helping us to anticipate market trends and fluctuations.

AI in total solutions

The advantages of AI extend to our customers, too, helping to enhance their businesses and to gain better results. When we consider how businesses are using AI on digital displays, it is through the use of software and apps. These solutions power interactive, personalised, or automated experiences on digital signage or interactive displays – on walls, in walkways, in kiosks, and other public spaces.

In retail environments, digital displays use AI driven software to offer product suggestions based on customer proximity, using cameras, or, if the customer is logged in, using data from loyalty programs and purchase history. AI enables gamification, adapting games and quizzes to engage customers. And in quick service restaurants, AI powered menu boards can change recommendations based on time of day, weather conditions, or local events.

Smart kiosks frequently use AI chatbots and virtual assistants to help customers find products, check prices, or access services. These systems may include gesture or voice recognition, allowing interaction without even having to touch the screen.

Meanwhile, in stadia and public venues, AI can be used enhance the spectator experience, showing live statistics, score predictions, and replays personalised to nearby fans’ interests.

Businesses also use AI enabled displays to get better audience analytics, perhaps using cameras powered by AI to detect audience demographics, such as age, gender, or even mood, enabling more targeted advertising.

And AI assistants can help streamline customer service, supporting with check ins at hotels, in transport hubs, and even in healthcare settings.

Integrating displays and total solutions together with AI

As AI evolves, so must the technologies that support it. Philips Professional Displays are designed for easier integrations, with many models including our professional Android System on Chip (SoC) that enables remote device management, and the ability to add software and apps more efficiently.

And just as AI is continuing to progress, so does the innovation in our displays. The new Philips Signage 5000 Series (D-Line) incorporates a 6 TOPS neural processing unit into the SoC, bringing even more AI power for our partners and customers. And the full line up of new for 2026 Philips Signage displays is AI ready.

Behind the scenes

AI permeates every part of business. While this article was written by a human, AI was used during both the research and the final proofing process. That has, inadvertently, been the case since the dawn of the Internet, but now we are actively considering the prompts we give. And we are expecting, and benefitting from, better results.

Just as we do not all consider the everyday use of AI when we are searching online, many people do not always realise that they are using AI when interacting with digital displays – whether in retail, hospitality, transportation or any other industry. Their experiences simply become smarter, more personalised, and more engaging. Bringing greater brand affinity and supporting buying decisions.

AI continues to progress. Its evolution will bring new benefits and opportunities for business everywhere, shaping the future of the AV industry as it does.
